Extensive green roofs are lightweight and are developed mainly for aesthetic and environmental/ ecological benefits. The depth of growing medium is about 8-20 cm. Plants are carefully selected to be dry resistant with minimum maintenance and usually a rainwater storage reservoir is incorporated in the system to minimize water consumption.


A semi-intensive green roof system is characterized by small herbaceous plants, ground covers, grasses and small shrubs, requiring moderate maintenance and occasional irrigation. A typical growing medium depth for a semi-intensive green roof is 20-45 cm.


This green roof system is developed to be accessible and may involve elaborate Landscaping requirements such as water features, landscape structures etc. The depth of growing medium is about 45-125 cm. This system is characterized by small herbaceous plants to big trees. Intensive roof gardens require regular maintenance such as mowing, fertilizing, watering and weeding.
